Gas Extraction Well Technology

Methane extraction wells are commonly used in landfills to relieve methane and other landfill gases from building up to potentially dangerous levels. In addition to the safety concern, the methane produced can be of significant quantity for useful energy, such as generating electricity. Methane extraction wells are completed in a variety of material including compacted to loose material, and can vary significantly in volume of methane recovery. Over time these wells loose capacity due to landfill shifting/subsidence as well as pore volume plugging and extraction well plugging casused by various deposited material. The deposited material may consist of mineral deposits, biological slime and byproducts of reactions between landfill materials. In addition to the deposited material the landfill continues to compact thus blocking off many of the fissures and pores that existed when the wells were initially installed.

The use of gaseous and liquid carbon dioxide applied during the patented MethaFreed™ process has proven to significantly enhance methane recovery. MethaFreed™ has the ability to apply energy and reduce surface tension, thereby allowing for the effective removal of biological and mineral encrustation, along with physically opening the compacted formation to allow for a greater flow of methane to the well.
